One-day live virtual training for clinical supervisors

The Power-Conscious Supervisor

Part 1: Embodied Ethics in the Supervisory Relationship

Supervision can make or break how a clinician relates to the work. Yet most of us became supervisors without anyone teaching us how to hold the power that comes with the role. In this day-long training, we slow down and get real about the foundation of power-conscious supervision: who you are as a supervisor, who is a good fit for you, and what you are actually agreeing to when you take someone on.

A practice of noticing

What you'll explore

Through framework, reflection, embodied practice, and small-group connection, you will explore how identity, attachment, history with authority, systemic influences, and clinical development shape the supervisory relationship, and how to supervise with transparency, accountability, and care.

  1. 01

The five core competencies of a power-conscious supervisor: self-reflexivity, relational awareness, ethical role clarity, contextual awareness, and power literacy

  2. 02

The types of power at play in supervision, and the responsibility and vulnerability that live in the power differential

  3. 03

Getting real with your intake process: your motives, your real capacity, and who is (and isn't) a good fit

  4. 04

What you are actually agreeing to: role, purpose, boundaries, and ethical obligations

  5. 05

Creating agreements that hold structure while meeting the relationship, including feedback and repair

  • 4.Identify at least two personal patterns (shadow, activation, or attachment) that may influence their supervisory decisions.
  • 5.Draft a supervision agreement that names expectations, feedback preferences, and a process for rupture and repair.

Facilitator

Kyla Jones, is a counselor educator, clinical supervisor, and somatic therapist whose work is grounded in relational, embodied, and power-conscious approaches to supervision. Drawing from her experience in clinical leadership, counselor education, supervision-of-supervision, and clinician development, she supports counselors and supervisors in exploring how identity, power, nervous system responses, attachment, and relational dynamics shape clinical and supervisory relationships. Her approach emphasizes transparency, curiosity, complexity, and the intentional use of self, with particular attention to recognizing relational patterns, working across difference, and remaining grounded through discomfort, rupture, and repair.

Grounded in trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, and culturally responsive practice, Kyla views supervision as a collaborative developmental process that asks supervisors to hold the responsibility and authority of their role while actively fostering supervisees’ agency, autonomy, clinical judgment, and emerging professional identities.
